Linux Administrator

Role:
Take primary responsibility for the ongoing management of a business-critical Linux (and Informix RDBMS) server infrastructure, within an established financial services organisation.
The successful candidate will assume responsibility for provision, expansion and ongoing maintenance of 5 Linux SuSE Enterprise servers with Informix RDBMS, working across a range of projects, initiatives, and day-to-day incidents and issues, to support the needs of the internal development team and business customers.
As a member of the Infrastructure team, you will also gain exposure to a diverse range of systems within a broader windows-dominant network environment, sharing knowledge and responsibility for the provision of a fully resilient and scalable infrastructure for our business.
Key responsibilities
• Monitor performance and capacity of server infrastructure (using monitoring tools)
• Administer Informix database environment
• Identify areas where improvements can be made to current technologies, processes and procedures
• Ensure servers are configured and tuned in line with best practice recommendations
• Ensure high levels of resiliency through real-time replication and backup automation
• Develop and maintain shell scripts to assist in the management of various tasks
• Perform standard server software upgrades and other maintenance
• Assist with development and maintenance of security policies and procedures in line with audit and regulatory requirements (e.g. Data Protection)
• Provide 2nd level support and technical assistance direct to onsite users and to members of the Service Desk team
• Act as point of contact for 3rd party support for any Informix and Linux issues
• Troubleshoot and repair server hardware issues
• Resolve any network issues on Linux servers (e.g. routing, firewall)
• Support development teams in releasing new versions of software, provision of dev/test environments etc.
Skills required
Essential:
• Strong knowledge level of Linux (SuSE) Enterprise and associated management and configuration tools
• Strong understanding of database technology, preferably in a DBA role – Informix and MS SQL
• Thorough understanding of server hardware and peripherals, including mirrored drives, RAID arrays and application servers clustering
• Experience with vSphere4 / VMWare 3.5
• Strong Linux scripting skills
• Good general networking knowledge (switches, routers, firewalls, access rules, NAT)
• Able to demonstrate superior creative, innovative and problem solving skills
• Able to interpret data, draw conclusions and make recommendations
• Able to analyse devices, designs, materials and processes
Desirable:
• Knowledge of Microsoft Exchange 2007 and Windows 2008 Server environment
• Knowledge of Checkpoint Firewall, 3Com, WSUS, iQuate, IIS
• Knowledge of Microsoft Sharepoint Server
• Knowledge of Symantec enterprise solutions (Backup Exec, AV)
• Knowledge of Avaya Telephony technologies (PBX, CallPilot, Symposium, iDVR)
• Experience in procurement, licensing maintenance or account management roles
