Director of Engineering

Position Summary:

The director of engineering reports to the CTO or CEO and works closely with other functional leaders in the company, including those in finance, sales, and marketing. The vice president of engineering is responsible for all of the company’s product development activities.

Responsibilities:

– Overall responsibility for the development and delivery of quality software to our customers within our current agile delivery process.
– Work with Product Management to deliver the product roadmap while responding to customer requirements in a timely fashion.
– Provide technical direction and guidance, as well as hands-on project management, for all product development.
– Ensure the optimal application of technology and engineering resources to meet product development and/or customer requirements, per the product and/or marketing requirements document.
– Ensure that the product is fully and correctly defined and documented.
– Hire and direct staff of senior group members and directors to acquire necessary resources and plan to meet scheduled commitments
– Manage multiple teams including offshore development teams.

Requirements:

– This early stage company requires a senior engineering management professional who has a track record in building strong engineering teams and delivering quality software to an international client base.
– This executive will be a key member of the management team with a direct line (or a direct report) to the CEO and will have a number of years previous experience in a similar role, ideally in a startup or smaller company.
– The executive will have a keen understanding of the latest technologies and development tools, especially cloud and SaaS technologies – mobile experience is welcome but not essential.
– This will be the key engineering manager in the company, managing a team of 15-30 people in the first 18 months, but ultimately growing this to a teams of 50-60.
– The appointment of this executive will allow the current CTO to spend more time with customers, partners and playing an international role in the development of the business.
– 10 years engineering experience, 5 years management experience.
– Solid understanding of engineering technical issues/needs, financial, sales, and marketing as related to product design and development.
– A solid understanding and 3-5 years experience of Agile software development
– A BS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science required; MA or dual BA preferred.
– Management of offshore/near-shore teams a must have.
